On Thursday, the Board of Education passed an action to shift the calendar for the 2026-2027 academic year to start in early August and end in late May, aligning with other districts in Sacramento county.

The calendar change will be permanent for all Academic Calendars from 2025-2026 out.

First semester finals will take place before Winter Break pursuant to the change, and SCUSD students will now have equal opportunity at preparations for AP and IB testing that occurs in May.

This calendar aligns with CIF sports calendars for all fall sports.

“Being a unified K-12 district, and meeting every different age levels needs is incredibly challenging. And I would contend that our secondary schools are really needing this change, and our elementary folk are the ones that are like, ‘but, we love this schedule for these reasons for our kids!’ and that’s just always a challenge… I do think that this is balancing a lot of needs for the secondary level that are super important,” says Board Vice President Tara Jeane from Area 1.

This resolution passed unanimously, with the exception of Board Members Singh and Navarro, who were absent.
